I use color and form to capture the fleeting nature of light and experience. I have a condition called retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary degenerative eye disease, which several members of my family also share. This experience is reflected in my art: light diminishes, time moves forward, moments fade. Each painting captures my emotional response to the ephemeral nature of light and of seeing.
My work is most influenced by the Post-Impressionism movement but also draws heavily from Fauvism and Expressionism. As a self-taught painter, I respect that art is a dynamic practice, always changing and evolving, and have a unique appreciation for the necessity of learning and studying those in whom I find the greatest inspiration. I look to, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, James McNeil Whistler, and Lucien Freud to inform my work and to help me create a vision that is all my own.
Almost all my paintings are from live subjects, whether it be a nude figure, portrait, landscape, or still life, and reflect the intimacy of the time and space I share with them. I use a simple palette and paint in heavy brush strokes and bold colors.
