About
Dub Lee is a self-taught artist who grew up in Edna, Texas, and only began his painting career in 2009. As a young boy, he watched his grandmother paint in oils on the porch of the family’s ranch house on long hot summer afternoons as cattle grazed in the surrounding pastures and towering thunderstorms boiled up from the Gulf of Mexico. It was in Louisiana, after completing a graduate degree, that he picked up a paint brush and began to pursue his own artistic vision.
His paintings are inspired by those early memories of the people and rural landscapes in which he was raised, and by his own struggle with his diminishing sight. Diagnosed with a hereditary debilitating eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa, his art is a meditation on the temporal nature of sight, light, and time. He wields color to find wonder in the ordinary.
In 2019, after a decades-long career in politics, he moved to Oklahoma and became a full-time artist.
